Romeo and Juliet

January 2020
Arts Mission Oak Cliff

Sometimes referred to as Shakespeare’s first authentic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet is lyric, dramaturgically symmetrical, and full of artful contrasts of light and dark. Any artifice in the language of this play—even the shared sonnet— thaws into something more naturalistic as Romeo and Juliet fall in love and begin to envision a realistic future together. True to its dualistic structure, the play explodes with violence and ends with it, despite the warning of Friar Lawrence: “Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast.”
